How can you improve your oral health? Daily flossing helps to clear out the bacteria and debris trapped in your mouth that can harm your body. What are the health risks associated with poor oral health habits?

When harmful bacteria enter your mouth, they can easily travel to your circulatory system. These are the same bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. These harmful bacteria can affect your liver and mistreat your body by inflaming your system. It can also lead to bad breath, increase your chances of dementia, pneumonia, erectile dysfunction, kidney disease and more. Flossing drastically lowers your risk of developing these conditions.

What is the proper and effective way to floss your teeth?

Our dentists recommend wrapping a piece of floss that is 15 to 18 inches in length around your finger. Slide the floss between your teeth in the shape of the letter C. It is important to move the floss up, down, back, and forth. If your gums begin to bleed, then it may be a sign of gum disease or the buildup of bacteria in your mouth. Keep flossing until the bleeding stops! If it remains more than a week after regular flossing, then contact your dentist for assistance.

Taking proper care of your teeth and gums can benefit your overall body and health. Don’t take for granted the effect you can have on your body by simple flossing! Our dentists also encourage regular dental cleanings and exams at least twice a year.
