The culprit is bacteria, in addition to other oral germs that can get to other organs via the bloodstream. As these get to your heart, they can merge with damaged areas and bring on inflammation. As this occurs, you are at risk for endocarditis which is a serious infection of the heart’s inner lining. You can also experience clogging of the heart arteries, and stroke, from the inflammation caused by the oral bacteria.

Gum disease–an infection of the oral tissues that support teeth–is also the biggest cause of tooth loss in grownups. To fight this, the American Dental Association advises a strong oral care habit. This will benefit your oral health and your overall health. To accomplish this, you should practice the following:

  •         Clean your teeth every day to rid them of plaque, bacteria, and food particles. Brush twice a day with an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste to protect tooth enamel.
  •         Use a dental flossing method that works best for you once a day to clean the areas between teeth and around the gumline.
  •         Aim for a nutritious, balanced diet and avoid snacking in between meals.
  •         Get bi-annual dental cleanings and checkups
